Fact 1                                                Calvert Cliffs  is one of the worlds premier fossil=hunting hotspots.  The cliffs are a treasure trove of  Miocene-era relics where prehistoric Otodus megalodon fossils are regulary discovered by beachcombers.                                           

Fact 2                                                              An Acient Shark Nursary:                      The abundance of smaller, juvenile megalodon teeth alongside adult teeth suggests that the warm, shallow, preshitoric Chesapeake Bay may have served as a nursery for young megalodons.                           

Fact 3                                                               The "One inch Per Ten Feet" Rule:    Paleontologists estimate the size of a megalodon by its teeth, using the rule that roughly 1 inch of tooth length = 10 feet of shark length.  At Calvert Cliffs, teeth up to 5 to 5.5 inches are found pointing to sharks that grew up  to 50 feet long.                

Fact 4                                                               A Rare Skeleton Discovery:                  Because shark skeletons are made of cartliage, they rarely fossilize: only their teeth normally remain.  However, experts at the                          Calvert Marine Museum                        painstakingly unearthed a groundbreaking set of 53 teeth from a single megalodon-an amazing discovery.                                    

Fact 5                                                              Maryland's State Shark: Maryland is the very first state to officially designate the Megalodon (Otodus megalodon) as its state shark.
